Keyhaven Kruise

10 Memorys got together for a fine weekend in Keyhaven, now christened the Keyhaven Kruise with tee-shirts and polo shirts available to aid identification those intrepid attendees. Great fun, well organised by Ben Collins and family, who supplied a magnificent breakfast too, and thanks due to Keyhaven Yacht Club for their hospitality.

Christmas & laying up supper

The Annual Christmas 'bash' at Salterns Boatyard of 2005 was attended as well as it usually is, on a bright crisp December noontide. The hot minced pies and mulled wine flowed to the sounds of endless natter about booms and barbecues, storms and successes. And this year's event was a first in that Tony Robinson MRINA, the designer of the original Memory, was there from up North - to be photographed surrounded by happy and grateful subsequent Memory owners.

In 2005, for the first time, we held a Solent laying up supper at the Royal Air Force Yacht Club in Hamble, where 30 enthusiasts enjoyed supper followed by the presentation of the shield awarded to the first Memory home in the Solent Old Gaffers' race, this year presented to Glyn Foukes and David Gorrard in Gretal who did astoundingly well, overtaking the fleet of 7 Memorys entered into the race (Memorys made up over 10% of the fleet!!). Past winners of the shield include Brian Crawley in Nutkin, Mike Brackstone in Merganser and Greg Dalrymple in Flugel.

Solent August Cruise

On a mid August weekend of 2005, the Solent fleet of Memorys set out for a summer's day cruise from all points heading for Wootton Creek, staying overnight moored at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, and then a leisurely sun-splashed reach homewards on Sunday. Only it wasn't quite like that ! The wind howled and the rain drove horizontal - but well reefed down, nine Memorys finally made it there and back home again in equally testing conditions. Evening and early morning glimpses of quiet allowed a snapshot of the first eight to arrive and the serving of a very full English breakfast for 20 + people, all from out of the tiny galley of one noble Memory ! But all enjoyed the very lively action - and patted the foredecks of their respective Memorys - for keeping crews feeling safe and secure, whatever the weather.

A sailing experience

On the Spring Bank Holiday of 2005, Roy Hart and 'Greensleeves', a Salterns cabin Memory, set off from Burnham and the R. Crouch. Single handed, he intended to cross the Thames Estuary and creep around North Foreland to Ramsgate for the night. Which he did. The following day he departed to negotiate the Goodwin Sands, not entirely without incident, and in a force 4/5 pointed South towards Cap Gris Nez. In a 28 knot wind 'Greensleeves' was happy to steer herself (without electronics !) whilst Roy cooked up breakfast in the cockpit. Eventually arriving in Calais with the comment "Great little sea boat the Memory !" a substantial French celebratory supper was followed the day after with a straight run home to Burnham, just in time to join in the racing. Memorys don't often 'go foreign' in the real sense of the words, but then, Roy and 'Greensleeves' aren't quite your day to day cruising couple !

Ore Stone Race

It started in 1999 when Memorys sailing out of the R. Teign of the SW coast set off on a 10 mile race around the Ore Stone, a big lump of rock island off Hope Nose, Torquay. In the 2002 season six out of ten Memorys in the SW fleet made it to the start line for a shortened course, at the second time of trying in pretty rough weather. 'Sophie' and 'Little Bear' battled it out at the finish with 'Little Bear' finally winning out for the second year in succession. Sadly, with boats moving locations, owners that is, this 'stimulating' event in the SW has fallen somewhat in abeyance. But someone, sometime will surely revive it?
